Here are the steps to take to protect your identity, your credit report, and your investing capacity.

    Fill out the registration form.

    Visit www.annualcreditreport.com and fill out the general registration page. By completing this step you will cut out the need to fill out the forms for all 3 different credit reporting companies; they use autofill for the rest of the forms to save you time.

    Select a credit report type.

    Once you have registered, the next page will give you a choice of 3 credit report companies to choose from. You can do all 3 (Experian, Equifax, Transunion) for no charge, and only need to go back to the original Annual Credit Report page in order to run the next.

    Print your results.

    With each of the 3 credit report results, print the page as well as your account number. Most of the free credit report companies keep the results available for a maximum of 30 days, so be sure to print the page for your own records.
